About Matt Salois, PhD

Matt Salois, PhD, is an economist, researcher, and veterinary industry leader who has spent his career making sense of the economic and business forces shaping animal health and veterinary medicine.

As President of Veterinary Management Groups (VMG), Matt leads a national community of more than 2,300 independent veterinary practices and works to strengthen the economic, cultural, and competitive future of independent veterinary medicine.

Before joining VMG, Matt served as Chief Economist and Head of the Veterinary Economics Division at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), where he helped bring greater economic rigor to questions surrounding the veterinary workforce, practice performance, productivity, and the market for veterinary services. Earlier in his career, he held global economic research and scientific affairs leadership roles at Elanco Animal Health, served as a chief economist in Florida, and was an assistant professor of applied economics at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Matt is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and holds an adjunct appointment at the University of Florida. His research spans veterinary workforce economics, productivity, business cycles, practice performance, and the economics of animal health.

A frequent speaker, writer, and industry commentator, Matt is known for connecting data with the stories behind the numbers—turning economic trends into practical insights about where veterinary medicine is headed and what leaders can do about it.

Matt holds a PhD in Applied Economics from the University of Florida, an MA in Economics, and a BS in Health Services Administration from the University of Central Florida. He lives in the Chicagoland area with his wife, four children, and a lively household with two cats and one dog.
